I’ve talked to a lot of business people and definitely learned a lot from them, but one of the conversations that struck me the most was with the CEO of a large retail company here in Southern California. Like the usual meetings, we talked about general things, business and family. We then we touched on the subject about “mindset.”

One of the advise he gave me was to change the questions I ask. I didn’t really grasp the complete idea and what he meant at first and I asked him to give me an example. He said start asking, “How can I help?” It’s a simple yet profound question.

I tried to start using this question onset of my meetings and it improved the flow of conversation with my clients. Asking this question made my them feel that I am their key partner. I started to gain their confidence on me and their trust. It allows them to start the conversation by being open to their ideas, thoughts, what they are looking for. An opportunity for me to see things clearly from their perspective.

This is also serves as a baseline for me to know the next actions I should take to greatly contribute to the success of the project.
